Bridging Visas

Overview

  • ✦Bridging Visas — Maintaining Lawful Status

A bridging visa allows a person to remain lawfully in Australia while awaiting the outcome of a substantive visa application, a merits review process, or arrangements for departure.

Most bridging visas are granted automatically when a valid onshore visa application is lodged, and they typically come into effect when the current substantive visa expires.

Bridging visa conditions, including work and travel rights, vary depending on the type of visa granted and individual circumstances.

The Five Main Bridging Visas

Bridging Visa A (BVA) — Subclass 010

Granted automatically when you lodge a valid substantive application onshore while holding a substantive visa. Keeps you lawful when your current visa expires. It generally carries the same work conditions as the visa you held, and in some cases the conditions of the visa you have applied for.

Bridging Visa B (BVB) — Subclass 020

The only standard bridging visa that requires its own application and fee — and it must be granted before you leave Australia. A BVB gives you defined travel and re-entry rights. If you leave Australia holding only a BVA or BVC, that visa ceases and you may have no visa to return on.

Bridging Visa C (BVC) — Subclass 030

Granted when you lodge a valid substantive application onshore after your previous substantive visa has already expired. It restores lawful status but carries no work rights by default. Work rights can be sought separately, generally on the basis of financial hardship.

Bridging Visa E (BVE) — Subclasses 050 and 051

For people who are unlawful or whose visa pathways have been refused or finalised, while they resolve their status or prepare to depart. By default it carries no work rights and no travel rights, and it may include reporting conditions.

Bridging Visa R (BVR) — Subclass 070

A specialised visa granted by the Minister (not on application) to people who cannot be removed from Australia in the reasonably foreseeable future. Following High Court decisions in 2024 and 2026, the mandatory curfew and electronic monitoring conditions previously attached to BVRs were held invalid and have been removed. Holders remain subject to significant reporting and notification conditions.

Four Things Every Bridging Visa Holder Should Check

The rules surrounding bridging visas are complex. Make sure you understand your conditions:

1. Work rights

Work rights vary by bridging visa and by the conditions carried over. If your bridging visa has a no-work condition, a variation can be sought — usually on financial hardship grounds — before you start any work.

2. Travel

Only a BVB allows you to leave and re-enter Australia. Departing on any other bridging visa ends it.

3. When it starts

A bridging visa granted with your application usually only comes into effect when your current substantive visa ceases. It then continues through processing and, in most cases, merits review.

4. If you become unlawful

If your visa expires before a new application is lodged, you become unlawful immediately. Acting quickly matters: lawful status can usually be restored, and early advice reduces the risk of detention or adverse consequences for future applications.

Protect Your Lawful Status

Bridging visa rules are unforgiving of small mistakes — travelling without a BVB, or working on a BVC without approved work rights, can have serious and lasting consequences. We check your conditions, manage travel permissions and work-rights applications, and keep your status protected at every stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A bridging visa allows you to remain lawfully in Australia while your substantive visa application or appeal is being processed.

Work rights depend on the specific type of bridging visa and your individual circumstances.

Most bridging visas do not allow travel unless specifically granted travel permission.

Bridging visas typically remain valid while a visa application or appeal is ongoing, but conditions must be complied with.
