Skilled Migration Visas

Overview

  • ✦Skilled Migration Visas — General Skilled Migration

Australia's General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is a competitive, points-based pathway for skilled professionals seeking to live and work in Australia.

Applicants do not apply directly for a visa. Instead, they submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the Department of Home Affairs' SkillSelect system. Candidates are then ranked based on a points test, and invitations to apply are issued to selected applicants.

While the minimum eligibility threshold is 65 points, actual invitation scores are often significantly higher due to competition within the skilled migration pool.

Points Test Reform Announced — Not Yet Law

Points Test Reform Announced — Not Yet Law

In the 2026–27 Federal Budget, the Australian Government announced that the skilled migration points test will be reformed to better select younger, more highly educated and higher-skilled applicants. The detailed design has not yet been legislated, and the current points test continues to apply. The Government has indicated that invitations already issued will be honoured under the existing rules. If you are considering an EOI, timing and strategy matter — we monitor these changes closely and can advise on how the transition may affect you.

The Three GSM Visas

Skilled Independent — Subclass 189 (permanent)

Permanent residence for skilled workers without employer, state or family sponsorship. Selection is competitive, based on your points score, an occupation on the relevant skilled list, and a valid positive skills assessment.

Skilled Nominated — Subclass 190 (permanent)

Permanent residence requiring nomination by an Australian state or territory government. State nomination adds 5 points to your score. You must also meet the nominating state’s own occupation lists and criteria.

Skilled Work Regional — Subclass 491 (provisional)

A five-year provisional visa requiring regional settlement, sponsored by a state or territory government or an eligible relative living in a designated regional area. Sponsorship adds 15 points. The Subclass 491 provides a pathway to permanent residence through the Subclass 191 once the regional residence and income requirements are met.

How Points Are Earned

1. Qualifications

Points scale with your highest verified qualification — from trade certificates and diplomas through to bachelor, master’s and doctoral degrees.

2. English language

Strong English results make a substantial difference. Proficient or Superior English (for example IELTS 7+/8+ or equivalent) can add significant points and is often decisive in competitive rounds.

3. Skilled work experience

Points are awarded for years of verified post-qualification skilled employment, both in Australia and overseas.

4. Partner and nomination points

A skilled, English-proficient partner (or single/Australian-partner status) and state or family sponsorship can each add points that matter in a competitive pool.

The Essential Foundation

Skills Assessment

Skills Assessment

A positive skills assessment from your occupation’s designated assessing authority (such as VETASSESS, Engineers Australia, ACS or ANMAC) is the foundation of every GSM application. Your EOI claims must be supportable, and a valid positive assessment must be in place when you are invited to apply. Obtaining the right assessment early avoids losing an invitation you cannot use.

Plan Your Skilled Migration Strategy Properly

With invitation scores sitting well above the pass mark and a points test redesign on the horizon, meeting the minimum criteria is rarely enough. We assess your credentials, identify legitimate ways to strengthen your score, manage your skills assessment pathway and prepare your EOI so you are positioned competitively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eligibility depends on factors such as occupation, qualifications, work experience, English ability, and points score under the skilled migration system.

A skills assessment is an evaluation by a relevant authority confirming that your qualifications and experience meet Australian standards for your occupation.

Points are awarded based on age, English ability, work experience, qualifications, and other factors such as partner skills or study in Australia.

Some skilled visas lead to permanent residency, while others may begin as temporary visas with pathways to permanent residency.
