Visitor Visas

Overview

  • ✦Visitor Visas (Subclass 600)

The Subclass 600 visitor visa allows individuals to travel to Australia temporarily for tourism, visiting family, or approved short-term business visitor activities.

Visitor visa holders are not permitted to work in Australia and may only engage in study for up to three months. Depending on individual circumstances, visas may be granted for stays of three, six, or twelve months, and may be issued as single-entry or multiple-entry visas.

The Three Main Streams

Tourist stream

For holidays, recreation and visiting family or friends. Can be applied for from outside Australia, or from within Australia to extend a compliant stay.

Business Visitor stream

For short-term business visitor activities β€” negotiations, conferences and meetings. Does not permit hands-on work or providing services to an Australian business or consumer. An invitation letter from the Australian host organisation supports the application.

Sponsored Family stream

For visitors formally sponsored by an eligible family member who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident. Applications are lodged outside Australia; the sponsor may be asked to lodge a security bond; and the visa is commonly granted with a β€œNo Further Stay” condition.

How the Department Assesses a Genuine Visitor

Visa officers carefully evaluate whether you meet the criteria for a temporary stay:

1. Ties to your home country

Evidence of your incentive to return home β€” employment, study, property, business interests or family responsibilities.

2. Financial capacity

Evidence that you (or your host) can genuinely fund the visit, such as recent bank statements showing a consistent history rather than sudden unexplained deposits.

3. Immigration and travel history

A history of complying with visa conditions in Australia and elsewhere supports your application. Previous refusals or overstays will attract closer scrutiny and need to be addressed directly.

4. Purpose and circumstances

Your stated purpose must fit your overall circumstances and be supported by consistent evidence β€” itineraries, invitations and the circumstances of your family in Australia and at home.

Condition 8503 (No Further Stay)

Condition 8503 (No Further Stay)

Many visitor visas are granted with Condition 8503, which prevents you from applying for most other visas while you remain in Australia. The condition can only be waived where compelling and compassionate circumstances beyond your control have developed after the visa was granted and have caused a major change to your situation. The threshold is high, and waiver requests must be properly evidenced.

Get the Application Right the First Time

Visitor visas are frequently refused where the evidence does not clearly support the stated purpose of travel. A refusal then becomes part of your immigration history and must be declared in future applications. We prepare applications with consistent, well-organised evidence, and we advise on Condition 8503 waiver requests where circumstances genuinely support one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Visitor visas allow short-term stays for tourism, visiting family, or limited business activities. Work is generally not permitted.

Stay periods vary depending on visa conditions, typically ranging from a few months up to 12 months in some cases.

Common reasons include concerns about genuine intention to visit, financial capacity, or risk of overstaying.

In some cases, you may apply for a new visa while in Australia, subject to visa conditions.
